My mate asked me to spec a PC for about £800. This is what he ended up getting from dell:
Quote:
XPS™ 420 - (D09X408)

Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Processor Q9400 (2.66Ghz, 1333Mhz FSB, 6MB L2 cache)
4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [4x1024]
512MB ATI® Radeon® 3870 Graphics card
1.2 TB (2x 640 GB) Serial ATA (7200 Rpm) Dual HDD Config Raid 0 Stripe
19-in-1 Bluetooth Media Card Reader
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 - English
Blu-Ray RW Disc Drive (read/write CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Disc)
Microsoft® Works 9 - English
1Yr XPS Premium Warranty Support - Priority Call In and Onsite Support
1 Year Base Warranty

Total Price: £ 788.54

I had real trouble quoting against this. For £800 all I could offer over this was better gfx option (he wasn't worried) and RAID-5 (3x500G) rather than RAID-0, and a cheaper overclocked processor :/ probably a better PSU and a Sugo case.

You could probably offer an infinitely better motherboard too! The performance of my Dell PC here are work is shocking. The HDD read speed is atrocious - which is probably why they always provide them with raided HDD's. Unfortunately I didn't know that when I un-raided it. :(

It's hard to beat Dell on sub £600 PCs, I usually loose. But with 'enthusiast' PCs I can usually beat or match Dell, for example:

Slightly better spec for a few pence less, scan offers free delivery too but it hasn't been applied to the basket.

Yeah I said as much. About the same price for a better system, but not that much better - the graphics + hdd's + motherboard... it's a hard sell. Don't forget I then won't get anything for building him a PC. Also support might have been putting him off. This way he gets Dell warranty... :/

I still get free delivery as a hexus member
