Most of you know what a 4x20 parallel LCD looks like, if one is to be mounted internally it would probably mean the parallel cable has to come out the back of the case. Personally I hate wires hanging out the PC so I've come up with this mod.

Image

This way there are no cables hanging out the back of the case and during transportation the cable can be easily removed to prevent port damage. The LCD was self soldered, told you I'm no good at this :P.

The port on the PCI is a VGA style port with 15 pins, however it's reversed to the VGA plug end so the monitor cannot be accidentally connected. That PCI bracket and port hood was previously a serial cable expansion for motherboards without serial ports on the rear I/O and those plugs and plug housings for the external cable were purchased from Maplin.

Image

I also soldered a floppy disk style power connector which can be connected straight to the PSU or via a switch so the LCD can be turned off when ever necessary, like when it's bed time and I don't want the room to be lit with blue light.

Image

That switch is connected to a 4-pin Molex which also supplies power to the other switch that controls the case lighting. The 12v goes to the lighting circuit (cold cathodes & LEDs) and the 5v to the LCD. Like so:

Image

It's 1 in the morning so I think it's best I leave the case mounting for tomorrow, I'd also be installing the CMOS reset switch too.
This stuff will be installed in my old Antec Super LANBoy, should look fab when it's done.

Oh, and I did test the LCD - it works fine despite the sub standard solder work.

Will update tommorow :D

And what was the "Q-Tec event"? Was there a fair amount of fallout?

It all started when I spent £80 for the case, £120 on a new graphics card and £160 for the CPU. I wanted the machine to be complete ASAP so I spent the remaining £20 I had on a 450W Q-Tec PSU and a double cheese burger.

After two weeks of operating the system began to randomly restart. After a month and a few weeks... PSU went: "Mmmmmnnnnzzzzzzzzz" giving off a burning smell then finally tripping the circuit breaker at the distribution box.

The PSU was then tested, but diagnosed as a "Golden flail".

Image

I had no idea if the hardware survived or not, so I flogged it on eBay and refitted the machine with Athlon 64 kit.
