Some of you may recall i posted recently in the Linux section trying to recover my HDD data after what i thought was an XP corruption.
However, i contionue to have the problem (locks up both in XP and during installation, as well as once whilst running the Ubuntu live CD) so i'm looking at possible hardware causes.
Whilst browsing my BIOS 'PC Health' menu i noticed it was reading that my Tagan 480W PSU was drooping to 11.8V on the 12V rail, so i changed it out for my 530W Modular and got an even worse reading of 11.73
Any feelings/suggestions? Is this droop enough to have caused the crashing?

my +12v is regularly 11.88v and have no problems whatsoever

have measured the voltage at the molex (+12v) and it was spot on

don't think it'd be related to that tbh

ATX spec requires 5% tolerance on +12v, so 11.4-12.6v. Although I have seen random system lockups and seemingly failing hard drives due to being too low. But doubt 11.8v would cause any problem. Also as said, the BIOS reading isn't always the same as the actual voltage measured at the molex connector. Could try reducing the power load on the system though, like removing powerful video card, underclocking CPU, 1 memory module, 1 drive, etc.

Servers 12v rail runs at 10.5v most of the time happily - should really replace it sometime!

Floppy drive required, or maybe a USB disk these day?? Haven't tried the USB yet. Should actually.
