^^ agreed, there isn't a film out there on blu-ray that's over 30G, unless you include ALL the extra's etc. A decent rip is 24G.

The reason I wouldn't buy one is they are still overpriced. If you are REALLY keen, buy one. But only if you'll get £150 worth of use out of it in the next 6 months.

It's all still settling down and prices are falling rediculously fast, why move on it now? This is the sort of thing that only happens every 10 years or more (VCR -> DVD -> HD).

I certainly wouldn't spend all that money on a writer because as everyone is saying its new technology and you pay through the nose for it. For me it would have to be Harddrives, if your concerned about them being tied into that machine just use your hardrives in external caddys then you can move it from place to place. With your 32" tv you could connect it from your computer and watch them that way (maybe some issues if you dont have a HDCP-compliant gfx card or tv but i am sure you can get round this)also do you know what res your 32" can handle just out of interest?. HD-DVD's for example dont use .vob files as were all familiar with and use .evo files (basically vc-1 files) which can be played through PowerDVD7.2....i think you can play them in earlier versions if your not HDCP but i would have to check. And yes the HD-DVD releases i have downloaded are around the 25gb mark however i have seen them upto 50gb....and considering thats around the size of the discs you have to plan it around that figure imo.

My 2cents :D

that was my whole point....see my Media setup in chill out lounge darthh, i wanted the drive to play bluray and HD dvds through my tv...as the LG equivilant is £700 compared to £170...i was just saying the bluray burner was a bonus if i ever do burn stuff etc...

Yeh my gfx is compatiable its a HD2600pro 512 http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductI ... tID=685083

my 32" can handle 1360x768 however...with powerstrip i can get 1366x768, but tbh theres no need....the HD and Bluray films already on my HD ;) do look VERY nice

I don't think the drive is a bad idea, only that in 6 months it might be half that price again. I would be tempted to wait a bit longer for a drive, but if you really want one now then it's not a bad purchase as a read only drive costs 100quid.

On this blu-ray note (& the HD vs Blu-ray) am I right in thinking Samsung (or Toshiba) has got its hands in both camps?

Toshiba Samsung corp. Toshiba is in the camp for one of them. & Samsung is in the camp for the other standard. I noticed this awhile ago.

hmmm I would be interested to see who columbia tristar (sony) go with as they normally have allot to do with what format wins and which doesn't.

 Sony IS Blueray. Heard of the PS3? The PS3 has put BR in the front, along with all the new studios going BR only. Only if M$ pull their cheque book out again will any other studios move to HD.

darthh, Sony are likely to go with BluRay as the PS3 uses BluRay and is currently the cheapest BluRay player around iirc.

Yes thats an all out I remember reading magazine articles all about it ages ago.
But expect to see optical drives that support both standards eventually like with DVD plus & Minus

There are so few (compared to DVD) Blu-Ray titles it doesn't make sense to buy a Blu-Ray player at a high price, what does make sense is a Blu-Ray player that does something else like play PS3 games to justify that price. There aren't any cheap HD DVD players either but since the Xbox 360 doesn't do HD-DVDs there isn't an incentive to buy an expensive HD DVD player. IMO this is causing companies to shift to Blu-Ray, the term HD was ssooooooooo last year anyway.

That's what this topic is about. A BluRay writer/HD Reader.
